Clinical education is a vital aspect of the Athletic Training Education Program. Clinical education has been developed to ensure learning over time. There are six clinical education courses, each focusing on specific clinical proficiencies that have been taught and practiced in the classroom and laboratory sessions during previous semesters. Each clinical course includes clinical rotations that progressively develop in complexity, exposure and expectations.
Students complete on-campus and off-campus rotations in a variety of settings. By the end of their academic plan, students will have completed clinical education in collegiate and high school athletics, in a family practice and urgent care facility, in an orthopedic clinic, and an outpatient rehabilitation and therapy clinic.
Once admitted to the athletic training major, students will register and complete each of the following courses in sequence:
ATH 2300 – Athletic Training Clinical Education I (Fall I, 2 credit hours)
Students complete three 5-week rotations in an equipment intensive setting, a lower extremity setting, and an Athletic Training Center experience with the Greensboro College Athletics Program under the direct supervision of an Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI). A minimum of 90 hours of clinical education are required.
ATH 2310 - Athletic Training Clinical Education II (Spring I, 2 credit hours)
Students complete one 5-week rotation in a upper extremity setting, a 5-week rotation at an urgent care clinic, and a 5-week rotation in an orthopedic physicians clinic under the direct supervision of clinical instructors (CI). A minimum of 90 hours of clinical education are required.
ATH 3300 - Athletic Training Clinical Education III (Fall II, 3 credit hours)
Students completing this course learn under the direct supervision of an ACI and
provide athletic training services to a collegiate athletic team or an area high school population for an entire semester. A minimum of 135 hours of clinical education are required.
ATH 3310 - Athletic Training Clinical Education IV (Spring II, 3 credit hours)
Students completing this course learn under the direct supervision of an ACI and provide athletic training services to a collegiate athletic team or an area high school population for an entire semester.
Students complete the appropriate rotation not assigned during ATH 3300.
A minimum of 135 hours of clinical education are required.
ATH 4300 - Athletic Training Clinical Education V (Fall III, 4 credit hours)
This course has been structured to provide the student with an opportunity to work with an ACI in either an outpatient rehabilitation clinic or with a collegiate athletic team for an entire semester. During this rotation, students will become an integral member of the facility’s staff. Students are required to complete a minimum of 180 hours of clinical experience.
AT 4310 - Athletic Training Clinical Education VI (Spring III, 4 credit hours)
This course has been structured to provide the student with an opportunity to work with an ACI in either an outpatient rehabilitation clinic or with a collegiate athletic team for an entire semester. During this rotation, students will become an integral member of the facility’s staff.
Students complete the appropriate rotation not assigned during ATH 4300.
Students are required to complete a minimum of 180 hours of clinical experience.
