Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Certified Athletic Trainer and what does one do?

A Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), with the consultation and supervision of attending and/or consulting physicians, is an integral part of the health care system associated with sports. For more information on the athletic training profession and where athletic trainers work, visit the National Athletic Trainers’ Association ( http://www.nata.org )

How do I become an athletic trainer?

Students must graduate from a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) accredited athletic training education program to be eligible for the BOC, Inc. (Board of Certification) examination. The student must pass the certification examination to assume the title of Certified Athletic Trainer and use the ATC credential. In the state of North Carolina, athletic trainers must also apply for a license with the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners (NCBATE) to use the title, athletic trainer, and use the LAT credential.

Is Greensboro College accredited by CAATE?

Yes, the Athletic Training Education Program is a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) accredited undergraduate program. Successful completion of the ATEP at Greensboro College allows you to be eligible to take the BOC exam.

How do I apply to the Athletic Training Education Program?

Applicants must complete admission criteria, including application to the program, 45 observation hours, letter of recommendation, and an essay stating long term professional goals and your reason for interest in the profession of athletic training. These materials are due by April 25 or August 1, depending on the intended date for admission into the program. Additional information can be found here.

Are transfer students allowed into the athletic training education program at Greensboro College?

Yes. Transfer students who are admitted to the college are welcome to apply to the athletic training education program. Upon admittance, students who have completed the required admission criteria to the athletic training education program are encouraged to apply. Additional information can be found here.

Are student-athletes allowed to apply to the athletic training education program?

Yes. Student-athletes who are admitted into the athletic training education program are allowed to continue to participate in intercollegiate athletics. However, student-athletes must acknowledge that in order to complete their clinical education requirements, they may require enrollment for an additional semester or year. This arrangement requires a special agreement between the student-athlete’s coach and the athletic training education program, and requires proper planning by the student to ensure all educational needs are met. Students are limited to participation in the traditional season. All student-athletes must sign the Policy on Student Participation in Intercollegiate Athletics found in the Student Handbook.

How long does the athletic training education program take?

Upon admittance to the program, students generally finish within 6 full semesters.

Can I have a part-time job and be a student in the program?

Due to the clinical education requirements of the athletic training major, it is difficult for students to work part-time jobs, however we realize that students may need additional financial assistance. Therefore, students must obtain prior approval for part-time work and it may not interfere with clinical education commitments.
